Victoria in Australia records biggest surge in COVID-19 cases in a week

On Monday, Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state, registered its biggest spike in new locally acquired COVID-19 infections in about a week, with authorities still struggling to identify the source of the highly infectious Delta variant noted among infections.

Eleven new cases were reported, up from two a day earlier, and all cases were linked to existing clusters. Melbourne entered its 11th day of a strict lockdown on Monday after the Delta virus variant was found in some cases. Officials stated that the variant was likely to spread more easily compared to several other strains. The source for the Delta variant infections is being probed and no genomic match has been found thus far with any other cases in Australia… (Reuters, June 7, 2021)
